Subnautica 2 has no official mod support as of Nov 4, 2026, but PC players do mod it: community mods load through UE4SS, an Unreal Engine scripting loader, and are shared on sites such as Nexus Mods and CurseForge. Unknown Worlds tolerates them without supporting them. Every hotfix post since Hotfix 4 (Jul 14, 2026) asks players to "temporarily disable, remove, or uninstall" mods before launching an updated build, because mods are not updated for each patch and "may cause crashes". The best-known mods so far are Comfort Tweaks, which changed the field of view before the game had a slider, and Killable Creatures, which lets tools hurt creatures in a game designed without weapons. Mods run only on PC; nothing here applies to Xbox.

Does Subnautica 2 have mod support?
No. Unknown Worlds offers no mod tools, workshop or official loader as of Nov 4, 2026, and its patch notes treat mods only as something to switch off. It said so before launch: in its Waterside Q&A video (Jun 3, 2025) the studio said official modding support during Early Access "isn't something we're planning for", while recalling that Unknown Worlds grew out of Natural Selection, a Half-Life mod. Its hotfix reminder says that once mod creators update their work, players can re-enable and reinstall them (Buddy System Hotfix 2, Oct 6, 2026). The studio has celebrated mods of its earlier games: the third Dive into the Legacy episode, Detecting New Lore (Apr 21, 2026), featured The Red Plague, a story mod for the first Subnautica.
How are Subnautica 2 mods installed?
Game Rant's May 17, 2026 guide shows the usual pattern, on the launch build:
- Download the UE4SS mod loader and extract it.
- Copy its "ue4ss" folder and .dll file into
Subnautica2/Subnautica2/Binaries/Win64in the game's install folder. - Put each mod's folder into the Mods folder inside "ue4ss".
- Add the mod's line to
mods.txtin that folder, for exampleSubnautica2ComfortTweaks : 1.
Back up saves first and remove the loader's files to return to an unmodded game. Since the hotfixes keep changing the game, a mod can stop working after any patch.
Comfort Tweaks and the FOV
Before update 1.1 added a FOV slider on Jul 8, 2026, the field of view was fixed at 90, and Game Rant pointed players to Comfort Tweaks by Volitio. Its config.lua sets a target FOV (100 by default), and F7 switches between 90 and that value in game. GamingBolt's May 18, 2026 review, on the launch build, asked why there was no field of view slider and noted that pulling the camera back meant "delving into the config folder on the PC". The built-in slider has made the mod unnecessary for FOV. See Settings and Accessibility.
Killable Creatures
Killable Creatures, by a modder called Jibotron on Nexus Mods, lets players attack creatures with their survival tools: in Notebookcheck's account the multitool hammer deals 20 damage to any creature and the Sonic Resonator 50. Jibotron asked why players cannot kill leviathans with a knife as in the original game. It appeared during the launch-week row over aggressive predators, when a developer told a player "We aren't a killing game" and Unknown Worlds then apologized for comments that made players feel dismissed, while keeping the no-weapons design. Notebookcheck found fans split between siding with the developers and wanting choice in a sandbox. Its compatibility with the current build was not checked for this page. See Launch Hotfixes and Dangerous Creatures.
Mods and the Terms of Service
At launch players objected that the end-user license agreement reportedly claimed that the studio and Krafton owned any mods made for the game, GamingBolt reported on May 20, 2026. Hotfix 2 on May 22 revised the terms, including the Limited License, Prohibited Uses, Ownership and Player-Submitted Content sections, and added Fan Content Creator Guidelines. The revised wording on mods was not read for this page, so check the current terms before publishing a mod.
