Farming
Farming in Subnautica 2 means Growbeds, built for Titanium x1, that grow plants from a seed item such as a Pent, Lucifer Rotsac or Fibrous Pulp, and since update 1.2 Necrolei Cysts. The Metal Farm, an Axum machine, grows a chosen resource on base power.
Farming in Subnautica 2 is done in a base with the Growbed, which the Habitat Builder makes for Titanium x1 under Cultivation: a plant is put in it from the item it grows from, and its harvest regrows without another dive. Destructoid's launch-build list names eight plantables, from the Pent (for Biofuel Blocks) to the Cradle Shootroot (for Lucifer Rotsac and so Rubber) and the Necrolei Cyst (for Strong Acid), and update 1.2 (Aug 19, 2026) stated that "Necrolei Cysts can now be planted in Growbeds". The other farm is the Metal Farm, an Axum machine built from a Mangalloy Ingot and an Axum Bacterial Culture, which grows a chosen resource over time on base power; it is named after, and scanned near, the Metal Farms in the far east. No written guide gives growth times as of Nov 4, 2026. In Unknown Worlds' May 9, 2026 showcase, played before launch, plants go into a Growbed with the Habitat Builder rather than an inventory grid, and Growbeds sit on base roofs and along the tops of corridors, stretch to fit, and can be built on top of one another. Building a base is on Base Building.

Sources: plantables and their costs from Destructoid, May 16, 2026, the launch build; uses from Destructoid's resource index, Game Rant's Fibrous Pulp guide, Dexerto's Scout Ray page for Strong Acid and TheGamer's food guide, May 15, 2026. Destructoid listed the Necrolei Cyst as a plantable on May 16, but Unknown Worlds' 1.2 notes say it "can now" be planted, so in practice it worked only from Aug 19, 2026.
The most useful beds early are the Cradle Shootroot and the Acid Raion, since Rubber and acid feed tools, batteries and the Air Bladder; Game Rant advises turning Lucifer Rotsac into Rubber early to save inventory space (Game Rant). The Necrolei Cyst saves trips into the hot biome for Strong Acid, which the Scout Ray, the Power Cell and Fiber Mesh all need. Where each plant grows wild is on Resources, and the food it makes on Oxygen, Food and Water. In Jade PG CRAFTED's May 16, 2026 guide, on the launch build, a bed's plant is picked from the Habitat Builder's list once that plant has been scanned, some for a plant item such as a Rotsac or a Pent and some for fiber alone, and the Macaron Sponge gives only fiber for now.
Growbed fixes
Update 1.1 (Jul 8, 2026) fixed Growbeds on a base's roof that could not be deconstructed, a Macaron Sponge in a Growbed causing network trouble for players who were not hosting, and a Freesia Flower's size showing wrongly after a restart (Unknown Worlds). Update 1.2 matched the harvest hitboxes to each plant's size, let multiplayer clients move Growbed items without falling out of sync, and stopped plants floating on after a base with a Growbed was refunded (Unknown Worlds).
What is the Metal Farm in Subnautica 2?
The Metal Farm is a buildable based on the Axum machines of the Metal Farms biome: built with the Habitat Builder (Cultivation) from Mangalloy Ingot x1 and Axum Bacterial Culture x1, it grows a chosen resource over time, takes base power, and several can be chained in series. Its blueprint is scanned from a Metal Farm near the alien structures in the far east of the map (Dexerto, May 14, 2026). Update 1.2 closed an exploit in which swapping the resource in an occupied farm kept the old resource's growth time, and fixed farms producing without power or after being moved out of range, chained farms losing power when the first one finished, and a false "Warning Power Offline" message when a farm completed (Unknown Worlds). No written guide gives its outputs or times as of Nov 4, 2026, but Jade PG CRAFTED's May 16, 2026 guide, on the launch build, shows them: the blueprint comes from scanning the Axum constructs there (at least three), a farm grows a node that the Sonic Resonator breaks for about three pieces, and her rough times were about 2 minutes for Salt and Copper, about 10 for Celestine, Gold, Sulfur, Lithium and Creature Enamel, and about 20 for Troilite. Axum Bacterial Culture, which every farm costs, cannot itself be grown. Power is on Base Power.
Frequently asked questions
How do you farm in Subnautica 2? Build a Growbed in your base with the Habitat Builder (Titanium x1, under Cultivation), then plant it from a seed item such as a Pent, Lucifer Rotsac or Fibrous Pulp, and harvest it as it regrows.
Can you plant Necrolei Cysts in Subnautica 2? Yes, since update 1.2 (Aug 19, 2026), which made Necrolei Cysts plantable in Growbeds. They are processed into Strong Acid.
What does the Metal Farm do in Subnautica 2? It grows a chosen resource over time on base power and can be chained with others. It costs a Mangalloy Ingot and an Axum Bacterial Culture. In Jade PG CRAFTED's May 16, 2026 video, on the launch build, it took about 2 minutes for Salt or Copper, about 10 for Celestine or Gold and about 20 for Troilite, for about three pieces each time.
Do Growbeds need power in Subnautica 2? No guide says they do; the Metal Farm does run on base power.

Metal FarmsThe Axum Metal Farms are the far eastern edge of Subnautica 2's Early Access map, about 2,000 to 2,200 m east-northeast of the Lifepod beside the Karakorum Power Plant, the only source of Troilite and Atacamite and where you find the Axum Bacterial Culture to build a Metal Farm of your own.
-
Base BuildingIn Subnautica 2 you build bases with the Habitat Builder, a tool unlocked by scanning two fragments at the Welcome Center near the Lifepod. Rooms, corridors, hatches and a Moonpool cost mostly Titanium, and a base needs power before its hatch supplies oxygen. -
ResourcesSubnautica 2's resources run from Titanium, Copper and Quartz around the Lifepod, through Silver and Lead to the north and northeast and Gold, Sulfur and Lithium in the hot volcanic area, to Celestine, Conduit Crystal, Troilite and Atacamite in the far east. This page lists each one with where guides found it on the launch build, the tool it needs and what it makes.
-
Oxygen, Food and WaterSubnautica 2 tracks four stats, Health, Hunger, Thirst and Oxygen; oxygen starts at about 45 seconds and the Standard Air Tank adds 30. Water is crafted from Water Slugs at the Fabricator (+40 Water), and food is cooked fish and Fabricator meals, safe only after the Digestion Adaptation; until then the Lifepod's Nutrient Blocks are the food.
-
Base PowerSubnautica 2 bases run on Solar Panels (1 to 8 energy per second by time of day), Hydroelectric Turbines in water currents, Thermal Plants by heat vents and Bioreactors burning fuel, linked by Power Transmitters and buffered by Power Storage. Without power a base makes no oxygen.
-
Best Base LocationsThe guides' best base spots in Subnautica 2 are a plateau by a water current about 200 m east of the Lifepod for free turbine power, the thermal vents about 630 m east for steady Thermal Plant power, and an outpost near the Alien Ruins about 1,150 m east for the late game.
