Observatory Island
Observatory Island is Subnautica 2's Axum tower rising out of the sea about 1,000 to 1,200 m east of the Lifepod, with the Alien Ruins (Unknown Worlds' Axum Ruins), the Rosetta Stone, a Biolab since 1.1 and the Axum Observatory, where the Early Access story stops.
Observatory Island is the single Axum tower that breaks the surface about 1,000 to 1,200 m east of Subnautica 2's Lifepod, with the Alien Ruins around its base (0 to 600 m deep, by All Things How's launch-build count of May 20, 2026), the Rosetta Stone that teaches you to read Axum writing, and the Axum Observatory, the last stop of the story in Early Access as of Nov 4, 2026. Unknown Worlds' notes call the ruins the Axum Ruins, or just "the Ruins", and put a Biolab there in 1.1 (Unknown Worlds, Jul 8, 2026); "Observatory Island" is the guides' name. You arrive after crossing the Collector Leviathan's trench in the Tar Cascades. The story steps are in a spoiler section at the end.

What is in the Alien Ruins?
- The Biolab: since 1.1, one of the game's three, raising the Biomods you can unlock at Biolabs to six (Unknown Worlds). See Biomods.
- The Cicada Wreck: behind a broken door that needs the Repair Tool are the Modification Station and Bioscanner blueprints (TheGamer, May 22, 2026), and the Photovoltaic Charger for the Tadpole (Game Rant). See Tools and Modifications and Tadpole Upgrades.
- Ruby's blackbox: and near "Blackbox - Ruby 2", about 300 m south of the Ruins at 165 degrees, a data card by Tadpole remains unlocks the Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 1 (Game Rant).
- An Advanced Battery to scan, made easier to scan in 1.2 (Unknown Worlds).
Beebom also lists an Alterra Base and a Hot Cave here (May 19, 2026).
IGN's May 19, 2026 map tour, on the launch build, finds that abandoned outpost east of the Observatory among alien ruins: inside is a safe zone with stocked storage containers, a Biobed to set as your respawn point and a working Fabricator, and two farming plots outside, one on the roof, that unlock farming when you scan them. Caves below it hold a small heated pocket with Gold, Sulfur and Lead.
The Rosetta Stone and the Observatory
The Rosetta Stone is a tall black-and-green pillar; scanning it lets you read Axum text (All Things How). Since 1.2, light poles connect the Observatory and the Rosetta Stone (Unknown Worlds). The Observatory's base entrance is a locked Axum Door, which All Things How says needs an Alien Generator. 1.2 sealed a spot that let players into the Observatory without opening its door, and holes under the map at its south side and nearby, and fixed Tadpoles left in one spot near it becoming unreachable. See The Axum.
Celestine, Creature Enamel and the Needler Nest
Launch-build guides send you about 300 m south of the Alien Ruins waypoint for two key materials: Celestine on rock faces 290 m south, 250 m or deeper, and Creature Enamel from blue-green Enamel Husks on rock walls about 300 m south at 200 m or deeper, both broken with the Sonic Resonator (Game Rant, May 15, 2026). They make Strontium, Enameled Glass and the Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 1. The Needler Nest micro-biome, 0 to 300 m, also has both, but is packed with Needler Mangos (All Things How), which fire tusks at up to about 20 m/s (Dexerto). The Tadpole's default limit is 250 m, so bring a Depth Module. See Resources.
IGN's tour finds Celestine on the walls and floor all around the Observatory area below 250 m, Atacamite set in the seafloor north of it below 250 m, and the Needler Nest northwest of the Observatory plateau, a steep area with Creature Enamel and a blackbox in its caves.
The Bloom in the Ruins
The Ruins have their own Bloom encounter, which 1.1 "Balanced ... to better align with game progression", with the Bloom Parasite as its main creature (Unknown Worlds). Its pink cankers snap shut and need the Feedback Resonator, the upgraded Sonic Resonator, which since 1.2 stuns creatures instead of scaring them off (Unknown Worlds). See The Bloom.
In IGN's play, small winding caverns directly under the Observatory hold squids that ram you and another infected area, which cannot be cleared until the Sonic Resonator is upgraded.
The story at the Observatory (spoilers)
Spoilers for the Early Access story follow.
At the Alien Ruins you clear the pink Bloom cankers around an infected Angel Comb with the Feedback Resonator to gain Axum Vision, scan the Rosetta Stone to read Axum text, then repair the Power Plant to get into the Observatory, Game Rant's guide says (Game Rant); PCGamesN puts the Axum Vision Angel Comb about 1,769 m due east of the Lifepod, needing Conduit Crystals, and the Bioscanner repairs the Power Plant's turbine (Game Rant). The Power Plant is on the Metal Farms page. Guides say the Observatory storyline is where the story stops in Early Access. There is no ending yet: 1.1 and 1.2 added no story chapter, and Unknown Worlds' roadmap keeps "the next chapter of the story" for the next big update (May 15, 2026), Early Access 2, due in December 2026. The whole route is on Story Walkthrough.
End of spoilers.

Collector LeviathanThe Collector Leviathan is Subnautica 2's giant squid, found in the trench about 700 m east of the Lifepod past the hot Graveyard waters; it cannot be killed, so you cross its trench low along the bottom in a Tadpole. Scanning it teaches the Sonic Echo Biomod.
-
Tar CascadesThe Tar Cascades, in the area Unknown Worlds calls the Sparse Plains, are Subnautica 2's dark, tar-coated crossing about 700 m east of the Lifepod, 0 to 250 m deep, where the Collector Leviathan guards the way to the Axum ruins; cross low along the bottom in a Tadpole.

BiomodsSubnautica 2's Biomods are swappable abilities chosen at a Biolab, 5 active and 10 passive on the launch build, four of them known from the start and the rest unlocked by scanning creatures with the Bioscanner. Update 1.1 added two Biolabs and passive slots earned by scan counts, and Early Access 2 (December 2026) moves Dash to the Fins and adds new Biomods.

Tools and ModificationsSubnautica 2's tools are the Survival Multitool, Scanner, Flashlight, Habitat Builder, Sonic Resonator, Wakemaker, Repair Tool, Air Bladder, Distraction Flare and, since update 1.2, the Tracking Tag, plus two Prototype Tool Modifications made at the Modification Station, the Bioscanner and the Feedback Resonator. There are no weapons. This page gives each tool's recipe, blueprint and use.

Tadpole UpgradesSubnautica 2's Tadpole has four upgrade slots for six modules made at the Modification Station: Engine Efficiency, Strike Armor, Cavitation Muffler, Photovoltaic Charger and Depth Modules Mk. 1 and Mk. 2. Mk. 1 raises crush depth from 250 m to 450 m.

The AxumThe Axum are the alien civilization of Subnautica 2, known only by what they left: ruins, an Observatory tower, a Power Plant, Metal Farms, Gateway Spires and the Rosetta Stone that makes their logograms readable once you gain the Axum Vision Adaptation. Early Access 2 in December 2026 expands their history.
