The Bloom

The Bloom is Subnautica 2's infection: biofilm, sap, cankers and parasites that block caves, infect creatures and Angel Combs, and cannot be cleared by hand. You get past it with the Sonic Resonator, and the armored pink cankers need the Feedback Resonator; some places and guides call it the Blight.

The Bloom is the infection spreading through Subnautica 2's ocean, and you get past it with the Sonic Resonator: the tool destroys Bloom biofilm, sap, cankers and parasites, which no amount of brute force will move (PCGamesN, May 14, 2026). Scan the Resonator near the "Blackbox - Wander" signal, where it sits in an open box in a cave mouth sealed by biofilm, and build it from 1 Basic Battery, 1 Wiring Kit, 2 Titanium Ingots and 2 Lead (the launch recipe). Later, the armored pink cankers around the Axum Angel Comb need its upgrade, the Feedback Resonator (Game Rant, May 18, 2026). The Bloom infects creatures and turns them aggressive, blocks oxygen pockets, and grips two of the Angel Combs whose Adaptations you need, so clearing it is part of the story. Unknown Worlds' patch notes call it the Bloom; some places in the game and some sites say Blight. In the clip, from TroubleChute Basics' May 21, 2026 guide on the launch build, the Resonator waits to be scanned by the "Blackbox - Wander" marker, and its charged blast clears the biofilm sealing the tunnel.

What is the Bloom?

A bacterial threat that "destroys everything it touches", spreading through parasites into host creatures and sealing off parts of the map (PCGamesN). Infected areas look muted, and infected creatures turn aggressive in a way the team compared to zombies (Wccftech, May 14, 2026). You see it as:

  • Bloom Biofilm: sheets that block caves and doorways.
  • Bloom Sap: it can block oxygen pockets, so clear it when you find it.
  • Bloom Cankers: the growths around infected Angel Combs; destroy them to heal the Comb. Pink cankers are armored and snap shut.
  • Bloom Parasites: white infections on wildlife and, since 1.1, "the primary encounter creature" of the Bloom.

Everything about it can be scanned: 1.1 fixed Bloom Sap not being scannable, and Buddy System Hotfix 2 fixed the Scanner's image of Bloom Biofilm (Unknown Worlds, Oct 6, 2026). Bloom infestations show on the Scanner Station. In Kingfisher's Jun 19, 2026 creature video, on the launch build before update 1.1, Kingfisher describes the Bloom Parasite as an eyeless cephalopod infected with the Proteus virus that feeds on blood and spreads the infection, making its victims more aggressive, found only near Angel Combs, cleared with the Sonic Resonator.

How to get past the Bloom

  1. Find the Sonic Resonator. After you find the remains at "Blackbox - Ruby", NOA gives you the coordinates of "Blackbox - Wander"; nearby, in an open box on a table in a cave entrance blocked by biofilm, is the Resonator to scan (PCGamesN).
  2. Build it: 1 Basic Battery, 1 Wiring Kit, 2 Titanium Ingots, 2 Lead. The Lead is in the Lead Zone northwest of the Lifepod (Lead).
  3. Blast the biofilm, sap, cankers and parasites. The Resonator also breaks copper, gold and lithium deposits.
  4. For pink, armored cankers ("the disease is armored"), upgrade to the Feedback Resonator at the Modification Station: Game Rant's launch recipe is the Sonic Resonator, 2 Enameled Glass, 2 Conduit Crystals and 2 Strontium (May 22, 2026). Fire from range so the canker does not close (Game Rant, May 18, 2026).

The infected Angel Combs

Heat Tolerance grows on an infected Angel Comb northwest of the Lifepod, about 205 m at heading 300 (PCGamesN). PCGamesN clears it in three Bloom areas: four cankers and the parasites at the first; the second to the north, past Nibbler Mangos, so bring flares; and the third guarded by a Marrowbreach, where four bright blue parasites must be destroyed before the core opens (PCGamesN). In TroubleChute Basics' May 21, 2026 guide, on the launch build, the Comb lies about 200 m from the Lifepod at a heading of about 250 degrees, under the "Blackbox - Wander" marker, and the cankers sit on its arms, with one more branch to the north to clear before it opens.

Axum Vision grows on an Angel Comb near the Axum Power Plant, about 1,769 m due east. Its cankers are the armored pink kind: Game Rant clears three infestation areas (west of the ruins at about 160 m, southwest of the Comb, and in a Cicada wreck to the east reached by an elevator) and then the two cankers beside the Comb (Game Rant). In TroubleChute Basics' guide, the first of these wings lies just below the Axum ruins and opens after two cankers. The story around both is on Story Walkthrough.

The Bloom by patch

Update Change
1.1 Adaptive Measures, Jul 8, 2026 Bloom Parasite made "the primary encounter creature"; "Balanced the Bloom encounter in Coral Gardens and Ruins areas to better align with game progression"; Bloom Sap scannable (Unknown Worlds)
Hotfix 4, Jul 14, 2026 Fixed Angel Combs not opening for some players (Unknown Worlds)
1.2 Buddy System, Aug 19, 2026 Parasite poison no longer hurts players in a Tadpole; new Parasite model; Feedback Resonator stuns creatures; fixed opened Angel Combs' cankers reappearing closed after an update, and Adaptations taken without healing the Comb (Unknown Worlds)
Buddy System Hotfix 2, Oct 6, 2026 Bloom Biofilm Scanner fixes (Unknown Worlds)

Update 1.1 made the Bloom Parasites the main creature of the viral blooms. In Aci's Jul 8, 2026 video on the update, the big bloom that had a Marrowbreach at launch shows none, and Aci saw little difference in the rebalanced encounters.

Bloom or Blight?

Both names are in use. Unknown Worlds' patch notes say Bloom throughout: Bloom Parasite, Bloom Canker, Bloom Sap, Bloom Biofilm. Dexerto's account of the roadmap lists "Blight encounters" for 1.1, and guides name Root Canyon places the "Blighted Wreck" and "Blight Nodes" (Dexerto; All Things How, May 20, 2026); Wccftech's briefing said Blight too, and so does Unknown Worlds' own 1.1 update vlog, which speaks of "Blight Encounters" and "the Blight creatures around the Angel Combs". Whether they are two stages of one infection or two names for it is not stated, as of Nov 4, 2026. This viki says Bloom, as the patch notes do.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Bloom in Subnautica 2? An infection of biofilm, sap, cankers and parasites that blocks caves, infects creatures and grips the Angel Combs that give Adaptations.

How do you destroy Bloom Cankers in Subnautica 2? Shoot them with the Sonic Resonator; the armored pink cankers at the Axum Angel Comb take the Feedback Resonator, fired from range so they do not snap shut.

What does "the disease is armored" mean in Subnautica 2? That the canker is the armored pink kind, which only the Feedback Resonator, the Sonic Resonator's upgrade, can destroy.

Is it the Bloom or the Blight in Subnautica 2? Unknown Worlds' patch notes say Bloom; some places and guides say Blight. This viki uses Bloom.

Can the Bloom Parasite hurt you in a Tadpole? No. Since update 1.2 (Aug 19, 2026), Bloom Parasite poison no longer damages players inside a Tadpole in Subnautica 2.
