The Axum

The Axum are the alien civilization of Subnautica 2, known only by what they left: ruins, an Observatory tower, a Power Plant, Metal Farms, Gateway Spires and the Rosetta Stone that makes their logograms readable once you gain the Axum Vision Adaptation. Early Access 2 in December 2026 expands their history.

Spoiler warning: this page describes the Axum ruins and how the story uses them.

The Axum are the alien civilization of Subnautica 2. You never meet one in Early Access: you find what they built, east of the Lifepod beyond the Collector Leviathan's trench, an Observatory tower that breaks the surface, a Power Plant, Metal Farms that still grow metal from power, Gateway Spires that speed a passing Tadpole, and a "Rosetta Stone" (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026). Their technology answers only to those with the Axum Vision Adaptation, from an infected Angel Comb in the ruins; with it, scanning the Rosetta Stone makes Axum writing readable (Destructoid, May 17, 2026). Who the Axum were and what became of them is not answered, as of Nov 4, 2026; Early Access 2 in December 2026 tells "the growing history of the Axum" (Unknown Worlds, Oct 22, 2026).

The Axum ruins

Patch notes call the area the Axum Ruins; guides group it as Observatory Island, a single Axum tower breaking the surface with ruins down to about 600 m (All Things How). Farther east and down are the Karakorum Power Plant, as guides name it, Root Canyon and the Metal Farms. The Overgrown Ruins, with heat zones, currents and blackbox signals, appear in the notes too (Unknown Worlds, Oct 6, 2026). Update 1.1 put a Biolab in the Axum Ruins (Unknown Worlds, Jul 8, 2026). Depths and distances are the guides', on the launch build. In IGN's May 19, 2026 biome guide, on the launch build, alien ruins and an abandoned outpost lie east of the Observatory, small caverns with another infected area lie under it, and the Power Plant stands just north of the Observatory area, reaching from the seafloor to near the surface.

Axum technology

  • The Observatory: the tower at the heart of the ruins, opened once the Power Plant runs. Since 1.2, light poles run between it and the Rosetta Stone.
  • The Power Plant: you complete its Axum Powerplant Turbines; Buddy System Hotfix 1 fixed turbines vanishing half-built (Unknown Worlds, Sep 1, 2026). Game Rant says the Bioscanner is needed to repair the turbine (May 22, 2026).
  • The Rosetta Stone: a tall black-and-green pillar (All Things How); scan it with Axum Vision to read the logograms. The game localizes "Axum logogram translations" (Unknown Worlds, Jul 8, 2026).
  • Metal Farms: Axum machines that grow resources from power; players run them, and 1.2 fixed several exploits (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026). See Farming.
  • Gateway Spires: a Tadpole passing through one gets a speed boost.
  • Items: Axum Bacterial Culture (scannable since 1.2), Quartz Memory Chips with Databank entries, and Axum and Tailings furniture you can build in your base.

Axum Vision

Axum Vision is the fourth Adaptation, the one that lets you "perceive and interact with Axum Technology" (Game Rant, May 18, 2026). Its Angel Comb, near the Power Plant, is infected with armored pink Bloom cankers that only the Feedback Resonator can break; you also need Conduit Crystals and a Tadpole able to dive past 300 m (PCGamesN; Game Rant). In TroubleChute Basics' May 21, 2026 guide, on the launch build, the main Axum Vision Comb lies about 500 m out at a heading of 100 degrees from the creator's base at the ruins, and the Feedback Resonator's charged shot travels some distance before it bursts, so the cankers do not close. The steps are on Story Walkthrough and The Bloom.

Who were the Axum?

Not known, as of Nov 4, 2026. Unknown Worlds has said nothing about the Axum's fate in its posts, and the colonists' "Singh 'Axum' logs" and the message in the Observatory (below) are as close as the game comes in Early Access. Fan theories link them to the first game's alien builders; no official or press source supports that. The Oct 22, 2026 vlog, with narrative designers Seth Dickinson and Tim Partlett and Creative Director Anthony Gallegos, promised "the growing history of the Axum" and a tie to the Collector Leviathan in the December update (Unknown Worlds). In the clip, the team says the update starts to tell "the history of the Axum" and their relationship to some of the world's creatures, and the vlog goes on to speak of "the Architects or the Axum".

SPOILERS: inside the Observatory, at the end of the Early Access story, an Axum message is translated. In Wizzo's May 15, 2026 story video, on the launch build, it begins "Architects, we beg your aid", says "the world trees are dying" and their roots are rotting, and asks the reader to cross the great trench; the analysis that follows calls the Titan-class life form on the horizon a world tree and finds an alien hibernation crypt below it. Who wrote it and to whom is not explained, as of Nov 4, 2026.
