Tools and Modifications

Subnautica 2's tools are the Survival Multitool, Scanner, Flashlight, Habitat Builder, Sonic Resonator, Wakemaker, Repair Tool, Air Bladder, Distraction Flare and, since update 1.2, the Tracking Tag, plus two Prototype Tool Modifications made at the Modification Station, the Bioscanner and the Feedback Resonator. There are no weapons. This page gives each tool's recipe, blueprint and use.

Subnautica 2 gives the player tools, not weapons: the Survival Multitool cuts plants and makes most creatures flee, the Scanner learns blueprints, the Habitat Builder builds bases, the Sonic Resonator breaks large ore and clears the Bloom, the Repair Tool fixes devices and opens broken doors, and the Wakemaker pulls the diver along. Two late upgrades, the Bioscanner and the Feedback Resonator, are made from those tools at the Modification Station. Unknown Worlds has kept the series' no-weapons design, saying on May 20, 2026 that it would tune aggression, aggro range, flare and Survival Tool effectiveness instead. Recipes below are from guides written on the Early Access launch build (May 2026); patch changes since are noted. The clip is Spyro ZA's Jul 10, 2026 look at update 1.1: hit with the Multitool, a creature is stunned or flees, and the Sonic Resonator knocks it out for a while.

Survival Multitool and Scanner

The Survival Multitool is the first thing to craft: it cuts plant materials, and since update 1.1 most creatures flee when hit by it and "do not retaliate except defensively" for a while. Hotfix 3 (Jun 1, 2026) made Nibblers more sensitive to it. Its cost is in dispute: Destructoid lists Titanium x3, two Game Rant plant guides Titanium x2. In Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build, the Lifepod Fabricator asks for three Titanium, Destructoid's figure.

The Scanner learns blueprints from fragments and fills the Databank from creatures and plants; rescanning a known object gives a few materials (Game Rant, May 14, 2026). It needs a Basic Battery, which in turn needs Copper and an Acidic Raion Pouch from the cave under the Lifepod. How scanning works is on Blueprints and Scanning.

Flashlight and Habitat Builder

The Flashlight's two fragments are close: one in a metal container at the bottom of the hole under the Lifepod and one in a rock formation about 30 m east (Game Rant, May 14, 2026); Destructoid places the second in a cave 110 m out at a heading of 250 to 300 degrees, on a lab table (Destructoid, May 16, 2026).

The Habitat Builder's two fragments are at the Welcome Center, about 80 to 85 m southeast: a metal box by its sign and a container inside next to an Oxygen Tunic, reached through a hole in the floor (Destructoid, May 14, 2026). Game Rant's guides name other spots (the Gene Donor about 160 m at 20 degrees and a cliff-top base at 225 m), so fragments likely appear in more than one place. Hold it in the hotbar and press the Open Menu key (right-click on PC) for the build menu. Since 1.2 its edit modes include Move, Deconstruct, Shrink and Refund Base; see Base Building.

Sonic Resonator

The Sonic Resonator is the key early tool. It breaks large ore nodes the Multitool cannot, destroys the Bloom Biofilm that blocks caves, cleanses Bloom-infected fish and frees trapped Gene Donors (Game Rant, May 14, 2026), which makes it the gate to the Heat Tolerance Adaptation. Its two fragments, in Game Rant's guide: one on a shelf in Quaker's abandoned base about 415 m north, and one in a white box on a metal platform about 235 m at 248 degrees, with Wander's audio log. It costs two Lead and two Titanium Ingots, so it also needs a Processor. Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build, finds the two in a cave on the way to Quaker's base and inside the base itself.

Update 1.1 added a brief dizzy state for creatures it hits, and 1.2 lengthened the stun to 10 seconds. Since 1.2 it can no longer harvest Atacamite. The clip is Anthony Gallegos's Jul 7, 2026 vlog, the day before 1.1.

Wakemaker and Repair Tool

The Wakemaker's three fragments lie 95 to 125 m north-northwest of the Lifepod at 18, 27 and 53 m deep (Game Rant, May 14, 2026). Its light can replace the Flashlight (Game Rant). Update 1.2 fixed an empty Wakemaker making the player slower than none. In Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build, it is much faster than swimming, right-click turns its light on, and it runs on a battery.

The Repair Tool's fragments on the launch build were Chap's base 217 m southeast on a table, a crashed base 270 m south on a sofa, and a deep base 347 m northeast by a window (Game Rant, May 14, 2026); since 1.2 two scans are enough. Game Rant also found Repair Tool scannables behind the keycode door of the Tadpole Pens (May 14, 2026). It opens the broken door of the Cicada Wreck in the Alien Ruins that guards the Modification Station blueprint. Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build, scans the last one in a small wreck out from Anita's blackbox at a heading of about 300, behind growths the Sonic Resonator breaks.

Prototype Tool Modifications

Two upgrades are made at the Modification Station by feeding it a finished tool:

Modification Recipe (launch build) Blueprint What it does
Bioscanner Scanner x1, Enameled Glass x2, Conduit Crystal x3 One scan in a crashed base about 540 m at 125 degrees from the Alien Ruins, beside a tower with four purple lights Scans creatures to unlock Biomods and passive Biomod slots; repairs the alien power plant turbine
Feedback Resonator Sonic Resonator x1, Enameled Glass x2, Conduit Crystal x2, Strontium x2 Two scans east of the Alien Ruins: by the green pools and in a Cicada Wreck in distant ruins Longer range; hits nodes and Bloom Biofilm from afar; needed for the snapping pink Bloom Cankers at the late Angel Comb; stuns creatures since 1.2

Sources: Game Rant (Mehrdad Khayyat), May 22, 2026; Bioscanner, May 16, 2026; Feedback Resonator, May 17, 2026; PCGamesN, May 14, 2026; 1.2.

Creatures scanned with the plain Scanner must be scanned again with the Bioscanner to count for Biomods. TheGamer places the Modification Station and Bioscanner scans in the same Cicada Wreck in the Alien Ruins, behind the Repair Tool door (TheGamer, May 22, 2026). The Tadpole's modules come from the same station.

Batteries

Every powered tool takes a Basic Battery. With the tool selected, press R on PC to load a charged battery or take one out and move its charge to another tool (Game Rant, May 16, 2026). A Battery Terminal in a base holds six and charges a Basic Battery from empty to full in about a minute; see Base Power. Update 1.2 closed a save-and-load trick that recharged and duplicated batteries.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the Sonic Resonator in Subnautica 2? Scan its two fragments (a shelf in Quaker's abandoned base about 415 m north, and a white box on a platform about 235 m at 248 degrees, per Game Rant's launch-build guide), then craft it from a Basic Battery, two Titanium Ingots, two Lead and a Wiring Kit.

Where is the Repair Tool in Subnautica 2? Its fragments were in Chap's base (217 m southeast), a crashed base 270 m south and a deep base 347 m northeast on the launch build; since update 1.2 (Aug 19, 2026) two scans unlock it.

What does the Bioscanner do in Subnautica 2? It scans creatures to unlock Biomods and, since 1.1, extra passive Biomod slots. It is a Scanner upgraded at the Modification Station with two Enameled Glass and three Conduit Crystals.

Are there weapons in Subnautica 2? No. The Multitool, Sonic Resonator, Feedback Resonator and Flares drive creatures off or stun them, and Unknown Worlds has kept the no-weapons design (May 20, 2026).

How do I recharge tools in Subnautica 2? Swap the Basic Battery with R (PC) and charge empty ones in a Battery Terminal in a powered base.

How do I open the Habitat Builder menu in Subnautica 2? Hold the Habitat Builder in the hotbar and press the Open Menu key (right-click on PC).
