Adaptations

Subnautica 2 has four Adaptations, permanent body changes taken from Angel Combs, as of Nov 4, 2026. Pressure Tolerance comes in the opening, Digestion from an Angel Comb about 130 to 180 m north-northeast of the Lifepod, Heat Tolerance from an infected Angel Comb about 200 m northwest once the Sonic Resonator clears it, and Axum Vision from an Angel Comb about 1,800 m east.

Subnautica 2's Adaptations are four permanent changes to the player's body, each taken from an Angel Comb: Pressure Tolerance (breathe the world's air), Digestion (eat its plants and creatures safely), Heat Tolerance (survive hot water) and Axum Vision (use Axum technology), in TheGamer's May 20, 2026 stats guide, which notes the Adaptations menu has empty slots for more. They are the main gates of the Early Access map: no Digestion, no local food; no Heat Tolerance, no Gold or Lithium. Unlike Biomods, they cannot be swapped. Angel Comb positions come from guides written on the launch build (May 2026), which disagree by tens of meters; the conflicts are below. No Adaptation was added in 1.1 or 1.2. The clip is TroubleChute Basics' May 21, 2026 guide to all four, on the May 2026 build.

Quick facts

Pressure Tolerance The prologue chamber where a new save starts
Digestion Angel Comb about 130 to 180 m from the Lifepod, between north and northeast; no tool needed
Heat Tolerance Infected Angel Comb about 190 to 205 m northwest; clear the Bloom with the Sonic Resonator first
Axum Vision Angel Comb about 1,770 to 1,800 m east, past the Alien Ruins; needs a Tadpole with a depth module and cleared Bloom Cankers
Count 4 in Early Access, as of Nov 4, 2026
Co-op Personal: each player takes their own (Game Rant)
Patches Hotfix 4 (Jul 14, 2026) fixed Angel Combs not opening for some players

Pressure Tolerance

Pressure Tolerance lets the player breathe the planet's pressurized air, above water included. It is granted in the chamber where a new save begins, in the prologue (Destructoid, May 17, 2026), and a door scan checks for it before the surface. Updates 1.1 and 1.2 closed co-op loopholes that let a client pass that scan without it by going through with a host who had it (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026). The clip is Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build.

Digestion

Until Digestion, local food causes "Digestive Incompatibility", and the only safe food is the few Nutrient Blocks in the Lifepod's storage (Game Rant, May 14, 2026). The Angel Comb is the first thing to find after the Lifepod; nothing is needed to take it. In Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build, the comb is by Anita's blackbox, and fish picked up on the way back become food once it is taken.

Guide Distance and heading
PCGamesN (May 20, 2026) About 130 m
Game Rant, Digestive Incompatibility guide (May 14, 2026) About 155 m at about 20 degrees, between north and northeast
Game Rant, What to Do First (May 14, 2026) About 158 m northeast
Destructoid (May 17, 2026) 180 m, between N and NE on the compass, close to Anita's blackbox recording

All four point the same way, north-northeast, and likely measure to different parts of one site. All Things How lists the Digestion Angel Comb in the Shallows (May 20, 2026). What to eat afterward is on Oxygen, Food and Water. TroubleChute Basics' May 21, 2026 guide, in the clip that opens this page, finds it about 150 m out at a heading of about 20 degrees, with Hammerheads nearby.

Heat Tolerance

Heat Tolerance lets the player survive the hot areas without damage, which opens Gold, Lithium, Sulfur fields and the Graveyard and its bunkers. Its Angel Comb is infected, so it needs the Sonic Resonator first: In Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build, this is the Wander quest: the Resonator blasts through the entrance and every blue-glowing growth along the purple tendrils, and creatures attack so often that Kysen used all four Distraction Flares brought and ended with one First Aid Kit.

  1. Make the Sonic Resonator (two Lead, two Titanium Ingots, a Basic Battery and a Wiring Kit).
  2. Go about 202 m from the Lifepod at a heading of 295 degrees and break the Bloom Biofilm over the cave mouth.
  3. Clear the Bloom blossoms around the Gene Donor, then interact with the pink flower.

Destructoid describes it differently: an adult, infested Angel Comb at a heading of 330 to 345 degrees, then a second infested one to the southwest, both to be cleared (Destructoid, May 17, 2026). PCGamesN gives about 190 to 205 m northwest. All Things How puts it in the Anemone Hills. Update 1.2 fixed a way to take Adaptations "without healing the related Angel Comb (via some very tricky swimming)", so healing it is required (Unknown Worlds). TroubleChute Basics' May 21, 2026 guide goes about 200 m at a heading of about 250, under a giant orange structure near Wander's blackbox, and clears Bloom growths in the tunnel and on each of the comb's arms.

Axum Vision

Axum Vision lets the player interact with Axum technology (see The Axum). It is the last Adaptation and far away: PCGamesN puts its Angel Comb about 1,769 m due east, needing Conduit Crystals; Destructoid's route goes east to the Alien Base (about 1,300 m) and on to a Power Center about 1,800 m from the Lifepod, with a Tadpole carrying a depth module, after clearing the infected Bloom Cankers around the comb (Destructoid, May 17, 2026). Game Rant says the Feedback Resonator is needed to cleanse this late Angel Comb, and that four or five Conduit Crystals appear around it once it is activated (Game Rant, May 22, 2026; May 17, 2026). All Things How places it at the Karakorum Power Plant, east of Observatory Island. TroubleChute Basics' guide puts it about 500 m from the Alien Ruins base at a heading of about 100 and shows why the Feedback Resonator is needed: its charged shot flies a distance before bursting, and the Bloom bulbs close if you get too near.

This stretch has story content; the Story Walkthrough covers it with spoiler labels.

Taking an Adaptation and known bugs

At a healed Angel Comb the player interacts with an "Adaptation core" (Unknown Worlds, Jul 8, 2026); since 1.1, a lit Flare in hand is discarded rather than holstered when you do. Hotfix 4 (Jul 14, 2026) fixed Angel Combs not opening for some players, which blocked progression, and 1.2 fixed opened Angel Combs' cankers looking closed again after a game update. If an Angel Comb will not open, update the game first; see Known Issues and Fixes.

Upgrade Biobeds

Two more permanent upgrades come from Upgrade Biobeds in colonist bunkers rather than Angel Combs: Endurance (+3 inventory slots, five beds) and Dexterity (+1 quickbar slot, two beds), seven in all in Game Rant's count (May 23, 2026). Two of them, Nahema's Lab and the Cicada Wreck, sit in hot water and need Heat Tolerance. The full list with positions is on Equipment. In Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build, the first is in Chap's bunker behind a red hatch, used by clicking the Biobed's screen, which is easy to miss.

Frequently asked questions

How many Adaptations are in Subnautica 2? Four as of Nov 4, 2026: Pressure Tolerance, Digestion, Heat Tolerance and Axum Vision. The menu has empty slots for more, and none was added in updates 1.1 or 1.2.

Where is the Digestion Angel Comb in Subnautica 2? North-northeast of the Lifepod, between 130 and 180 m depending on the guide (PCGamesN, Game Rant, Destructoid, May 2026), near Anita's blackbox; no tool is needed.

How do I get Heat Tolerance in Subnautica 2? Build the Sonic Resonator, go about 200 m northwest of the Lifepod, break the Bloom Biofilm over the cave and the blossoms around the Gene Donor, then interact with the Angel Comb (Game Rant, May 14, 2026).

Where is Axum Vision in Subnautica 2? At an Angel Comb about 1,770 to 1,800 m east of the Lifepod, past the Alien Ruins, reached by Tadpole with a depth module; its Bloom Cankers must be cleared first, which Game Rant says takes the Feedback Resonator.

Why won't the Angel Comb open in Subnautica 2? Hotfix 4 (Jul 14, 2026) fixed Angel Combs not opening for some players. For infected ones, every Bloom growth around the comb must be destroyed first.

Are Adaptations shared in Subnautica 2 co-op? No. Each player takes their own Adaptations, unlike blueprints, which are shared.
