Death and Respawning
When you die in Subnautica 2 you are reprinted at the last Biobed you set as your respawn point, with full stats. What you carried stays where you died in a small yellow container, its black box, which you must swim back to; carrying a Tracking Tag extends its signal.
Dying in Subnautica 2 sends you back to the last Biobed you set as your respawn point, where your character is "reprinted", the game's word for respawning, with health, food, water and oxygen restored (Game Rant, May 14, 2026; TheGamer, May 20, 2026). The items you were carrying stay behind in a small yellow container floating where you died, and picking it up returns them. Game Rant's launch-day guide says the game does not mark that place, but Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build, finds a beacon at its earlier death site, and Unknown Worlds calls the container's signal the black box signal. Before any Biobed is set, Kysen's deliberate drowning reprints him back at the Lifepod. TheGamer's guide adds that carried consumables are lost on reprinting, so expect food, water and first aid not to come back. Since update 1.2, "Buddy System" (Aug 19, 2026), co-op partners can revive a downed player before they reprint, and the new Tracking Tag affects what happens on reprinting (Unknown Worlds). What is permanent, such as Adaptations, blueprints and bases, is not lost.

What happens when you die in Subnautica 2?
You reprint at your Biobed, and everything in your inventory is left in a small yellow container in the water where you died, with a human-outline hologram over it; swim back, pick it up, and the items return to your inventory (Game Rant). Game Rant says nothing else happens. In Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide, on the launch build, the spot shows as a beacon; opening it gives the items back and it disappears. The hard part is getting back: if a creature killed you or the area was too deep or hot, the same danger is waiting. Game Rant suggests swim-speed Biomods and Basic Fins for the trip. The two launch-week guides differ on one point: Game Rant says nothing beyond the dropped inventory is lost, while TheGamer says reprinting "removes carried consumables". Nothing in Unknown Worlds' patch notes since settles it.
Reloading does not undo a death. In gameranx's May 16, 2026 video, on the launch build, the autosave is made at the moment of death, so quitting and loading brings you back already dead; only a manual save, made before doing anything dangerous and loaded from the Load list, rewinds it.
Where do you respawn?
At the Biobed you last set as your respawn point. The game begins with your "initial print" in a Biobed in the Deep Start awakening room, (Unknown Worlds, 1.2); after that, the respawn point is the last Biobed you interacted with and set as respawn, such as one built in your base (Game Rant). Building your own needs the blueprint, which Destructoid found at Quaker's Meetinghouse colonist bunker or in the room with Chap's black box (Destructoid, May 16, 2026), then Titanium x3, Glass x1 and Copper Wire x1 at the Habitat Builder. Game Rant lists a Biobed among the optional first builds (Game Rant), but a Biobed in a forward base, near the Alien Ruins for example, saves a long swim after a death far from home (Best Base Locations). Upgrade Biobeds in colonist bunkers are a different thing: they give inventory or quickbar slots, not a respawn point (Equipment).
The Tracking Tag
Update 1.2 added the Tracking Tag, which can be placed in a carryable such as a locker as a short-range beacon. Unknown Worlds' note adds: "If present in hand or inventory when reprinting, will increase black box range" (Unknown Worlds). The note does not explain "black box range" further, but Creative Director Anthony Gallegos does in the Aug 18, 2026 Update Vlog: if you die holding a Tracking Tag or carrying one, "it'll extend your black box signal far out", to help you and your friends "find your black box so you can find the stuff that you left behind". The black box is the container left at a death site.
Revives in co-op
Since update 1.2, players in co-op can revive each other before reprinting. A revived player keeps their equipment and regains a small amount of oxygen, and a downed player can instead choose to reprint at once at their assigned Biobed (Unknown Worlds). Before 1.2 there were no revives. In the Update Vlog, Gallegos says a downed player, whether hurt by a creature or out of food or oxygen, leaves a timer during which a friend can swim out, share oxygen and bring them back. Buddy System Hotfix 2 (Oct 6, 2026) fixed players seeing the host as dead after their own character died (Unknown Worlds). More on playing together is on Co-op and Multiplayer.
What kills you
There are no weapons in Subnautica 2, so most deaths come from running out of something or staying too long somewhere dangerous: oxygen (45 seconds at the start), hunger and thirst (the 1.1 notes name the Starving and Dehydration effects), Heat Zones without Heat Tolerance, depth (the PDA warns of "death by barotrauma"), and creatures and Leviathans. Each is on Oxygen, Food and Water and Dangerous Creatures. Creative mode removes the survival needs (Game Modes).
Death and respawn fixes
| Update | Fix |
|---|---|
| Hotfix 2 (May 22, 2026) | Infinite oxygen after dying of hunger or thirst while piloting a Tadpole |
| 1.1 (Jul 8, 2026) | Icons staying on screen during the respawn black screen and after reprinting |
| 1.2 (Aug 19, 2026) | Players stuck in the first Biobed after losing connection during the initial print; a client's camera stuck in the starting Biobed; a partly rebuilt Biobed turning into the free-standing kind |
| Buddy System Hotfix 2 (Oct 6, 2026) | Seeing the host as dead after your own death; Biobeds showing the wrong model after being moved |

Frequently asked questions
Do you lose your items when you die in Subnautica 2? Not for good. Your inventory stays in a small yellow container where you died, and picking it up returns it. TheGamer reports that carried consumables are lost on reprinting.
Where do you respawn in Subnautica 2? At the last Biobed you set as your respawn point, with your stats restored. Build a Biobed in a base (Titanium x3, Glass x1, Copper Wire x1) to respawn there.
Does Subnautica 2 mark where you died? Game Rant's launch-day guide said no, but Kysen's May 14, 2026 guide finds a beacon at the death site, and Unknown Worlds calls it the black box signal. Carrying a Tracking Tag when you die extends that signal.
Can you revive other players in Subnautica 2? Yes, since update 1.2 (Aug 19, 2026). A revived player keeps their equipment and regains a little oxygen; a downed player can also choose to reprint at their Biobed.
What does the Tracking Tag do in Subnautica 2? It is a short-range beacon you place in a locker or other carryable, and if you hold or carry it when you die it extends your black box signal, so you and your friends can find the items you left behind.

AdaptationsSubnautica 2 has four Adaptations, permanent body changes taken from Angel Combs, as of Nov 4, 2026. Pressure Tolerance comes in the opening, Digestion from an Angel Comb about 130 to 180 m north-northeast of the Lifepod, Heat Tolerance from an infected Angel Comb about 200 m northwest once the Sonic Resonator clears it, and Axum Vision from an Angel Comb about 1,800 m east.

BiomodsSubnautica 2's Biomods are swappable abilities chosen at a Biolab, 5 active and 10 passive on the launch build, four of them known from the start and the rest unlocked by scanning creatures with the Bioscanner. Update 1.1 added two Biolabs and passive slots earned by scan counts, and Early Access 2 (December 2026) moves Dash to the Fins and adds new Biomods.

Best Base LocationsThe guides' best base spots in Subnautica 2 are a plateau by a water current about 200 m east of the Lifepod for free turbine power, the thermal vents about 630 m east for steady Thermal Plant power, and an outpost near the Alien Ruins about 1,150 m east for the late game.
-
EquipmentSubnautica 2's wearable equipment is three air tanks (Standard, High Capacity, Ultra High Capacity), Basic and Improved Fins and the Rebreather, all made at the Fabricator, while carrying space grows at seven Upgrade Biobeds (five add 3 inventory slots each, two add a quickbar slot). The Standard Air Tank and Basic Fins are known from the start; the others are scanned or crafted from them.
