Deepwing Brooder

The Deepwing Brooder is Subnautica 2's peaceful Leviathan, a huge winged arthropod that drifts rarely through any biome laying eggs; its Deepwing Egg Clumps are a food ingredient, scannable since update 1.2, and fans designed it in the #LeviathanAwakens contest before launch.

The Deepwing Brooder is the one peaceful Leviathan in Subnautica 2: a huge winged arthropod that drifts through the ocean, rarely, in any biome, laying eggs as it goes, and never attacks (PCGamesN, May 21, 2026). If you see one, scan it, because you may not see another for a while. The eggs it leaves, Deepwing Egg Clumps, lie across the seabed and go into food such as the Pavlova (TheGamer, May 15, 2026). Before launch it was the "yet-to-be-revealed" Leviathan of Unknown Worlds' #LeviathanAwakens fan art contest (Unknown Worlds, May 2, 2026).

Quick facts

Fan contest #LeviathanAwakens, May 2 to 12, 2026

Where is the Deepwing Brooder?

Anywhere, which makes it hard to find on purpose. PCGamesN found that it can appear in any biome and is rare (May 21, 2026); Beebom lists it among the creatures of the Lead Zone, the sandy ridges about 400 m northwest of the Lifepod that guides group with the Plateaus (May 19, 2026). Its egg clumps are a better clue to where it has passed: Beebom lists Deepwing Egg Clumps as a resource of the Necrolei Hills. In Jade PG CRAFTED's May 16, 2026 guide, on the launch build, the Brooders swim in threes near the surface across the region around the alien outpost and the Axum ruins, out to the cliff edges toward the hot caves, and only the lead one drops eggs, every minute or two.

Deepwing Egg Clumps

The eggs are food. TheGamer's launch-build recipe for the Pavlova takes one Deepwing Egg Clump, one Sugar of Saturn and one Cherimoya Rotsac, for +80 Food, +70 Water and +10 Health (May 15, 2026). Update 1.2 made the Deepwing Egg Clump scannable (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026). The Databank explains the clumps: the Brooder releases droplets of oil with its eggs, a decoy that draws predators away from the real ones and feeds the ocean, while the true eggs are "a valuable food supply" for whatever survives the competition (Dexerto, May 14, 2026). In Jade PG CRAFTED's May 16, 2026 guide, on the launch build, the eggs fall as pale blue orbs that settle on the seabed at about 100 m; only the larger, heavier ones can be picked up, and they vanish after a few minutes. More recipes are on Oxygen, Food and Water.

What is the Deepwing Brooder?

An enormous armored arthropod. In Dexerto's copy of its entry, it filters plankton through gill openings at the rear of its thoracic keel, has a beak made for cracking and tearing hard prey, and molts: its shed shells sink with their grease to feed the creatures of the deep (Dexerto, May 14, 2026).

The #LeviathanAwakens fan art contest

From May 2 to May 12, 2026, Unknown Worlds asked fans to "Wake the Deepwing Brooder Leviathan with your own hands": draw their own version of the still-unrevealed creature on an official template (at least 2,048 px) and post it on X, Instagram, Facebook or Discord with #Subnautica2 #LeviathanAwakens. "One lucky winner" would have their design made into an in-game poster (Unknown Worlds, May 2, 2026). Unknown Worlds' Steam posts have not named a winner or announced the poster, as of Nov 4, 2026.
