Creatures
Subnautica 2's Early Access ocean holds about three dozen named creatures, from harmless Water Slugs to four Leviathans; none can be killed with a weapon, scanning them unlocks Biomods, and Early Access 2 in December 2026 adds new and returning creatures.
Subnautica 2 has about three dozen named creatures in Early Access as of Nov 4, 2026: Dexerto's index of May 19, 2026 lists 34 species, among them four Leviathans (the Collector Leviathan, Shiver Leviathan, Great Jaw and Deepwing Brooder) and a handful of predators covered on Dangerous Creatures. There are no weapons in the game, by design: you avoid, distract, stun or outswim what hunts you, and you scan everything, because scanning creatures is how you learn Biomods. Unknown Worlds has promised "dynamic new (and returning) creatures" for Early Access 2 in December 2026 (Unknown Worlds, Nov 3, 2026), so this list will grow.

Patch notes name a few more creatures that Dexerto's index leaves out: the Periscopic Clowncrab, the Necrolei, the HiHat, the Teal Cyclopet and the Bloom Parasite, the main creature of The Bloom since 1.1 (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026). Patch notes also call two predators "Needlershark" and "Twin Eel", where guides say Needler Mango and Twin Sitaray; this viki uses the guides' names.
How creatures behave
Every creature in Subnautica 2 reacts to what is around it. Unknown Worlds described a "stimulus" system in which creatures keep reassessing a situation instead of following a script, and the Collector Leviathan's dev vlog showed it running on Unreal Engine behavior trees (Game Rant, Sep 17, 2025). Predators hunt small fish as well as you: since 1.2, Nibblers "now hunt small fish reliably and more visibly" (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026). Infected creatures turn aggressive, which the team compared to zombies (Wccftech, May 14, 2026). The clip is Kingfisher's Jun 19, 2026 video, on the build before update 1.1.
Light, sound and vehicles draw attention. The Marrowbreach's databank says its small eyes are drawn by bright light (Dexerto); Bulletheads home in on alarms and beacons; Hammerheads followed Tadpole lights all the way back to players' bases until Hotfix 2 of May 22, 2026 toned that down (Unknown Worlds).
Can you kill creatures in Subnautica 2?
No. Subnautica has never had weapons, and Unknown Worlds said after launch that it would keep it so: the series "has always been built around vulnerability, exploration, and survival rather than traditional weapon-based combat" (Unknown Worlds, May 20, 2026). The same letter admitted predator encounters felt "more frustrating than tense or exciting" and promised better tools, which came in the next patches:
- The Survival Multitool makes most creatures flee when you hit them, and they do not retaliate for a while, except in self-defense (1.1, Jul 8, 2026).
- The Sonic Resonator leaves most creatures dizzy (1.1); 1.2 extended its stun to 10 seconds.
- The Feedback Resonator stuns creatures instead of scaring them away since 1.2 (Aug 19, 2026).
- Flares distract predators: guides use them on the Marrowbreach and on Nibbler Mangos (PCGamesN, May 14, 2026).
The tools are on Tools and Modifications; which creature needs which is on Dangerous Creatures.
Scanning creatures
Scan every creature you meet with the Scanner or Bioscanner. A scan fills the Databank entry, and some scans teach a Biomod, a swappable ability you apply at a Biolab (TheGamer, May 20, 2026). Since 1.1, scanning more creatures with the Bioscanner also unlocks extra passive Biomod slots, and 1.1 "Revised the Creature Naming and Discovery System to align with the previous game" (Unknown Worlds, Jul 8, 2026). In Spyro ZA's Jul 10, 2026 video on update 1.1, a creature already scanned with the ordinary Scanner has to be scanned again with the Bioscanner before it counts toward the slots, and plants count as well as fish. The full list of Biomods and the creature behind each is on Biomods; how scanning works is on Blueprints and Scanning.
Creatures in Early Access 2
Unknown Worlds' Nov 3, 2026 dev vlog, "From Creatures to Chassis", promised "dynamic new (and returning) creatures" and new technology to make them feel "more alive and more… alien", for the update due in December 2026 (Unknown Worlds). Creative Director Anthony Gallegos said the Collector Leviathan gets new behavior that makes it scarier (GamingBolt, Oct 15, 2026). In the video the team names two newcomers: the Tar Eel, which lies low in the flowing tar and challenges you on the ground, and the Descender, a fish around the Ignis Coil that looks toward the Collector and hides from it, giving you clues to where the Leviathan is. Other names from datamined files are not facts. See Early Access 2.

LeviathansSubnautica 2 has four Leviathans in Early Access as of Nov 4, 2026: the Collector Leviathan, the Shiver Leviathan, the Great Jaw and the Deepwing Brooder. Only the Collector hunts you inside the play area, and Early Access 2 in December 2026 makes it scarier. -
Collector LeviathanThe Collector Leviathan is Subnautica 2's giant squid, found in the trench about 700 m east of the Lifepod past the hot Graveyard waters; it cannot be killed, so you cross its trench low along the bottom in a Tadpole. Scanning it teaches the Sonic Echo Biomod.
-
Shiver LeviathanThe Shiver Leviathan guards the edge of Subnautica 2's Early Access map in groups and kills instantly once you cross the red striped border; swim back inside the border and it stops chasing you.
-
Great JawThe Great Jaw is Subnautica 2's giant clam Leviathan, about 350 m from the Lifepod at heading 195; it opens as you approach and snaps shut if you touch the red fibers in its core, and the lithium nodules it expels make it a lithium farm. Since update 1.2 you cannot build a base inside it.
-
Deepwing BrooderThe Deepwing Brooder is Subnautica 2's peaceful Leviathan, a huge winged arthropod that drifts rarely through any biome laying eggs; its Deepwing Egg Clumps are a food ingredient, scannable since update 1.2, and fans designed it in the #LeviathanAwakens contest before launch.
-
Dangerous CreaturesSubnautica 2's dangerous creatures below Leviathan size are the Marrowbreach, Hammerhead, Nibbler Mango, Needler Mango, Bullethead, Twin Sitaray, Sandspear, Foureye, Bloom Parasite and Tongue Thief; none can be killed, so you deter them with the Survival Multitool, the Sonic Resonator and flares.
