Shiver Leviathan
The Shiver Leviathan guards the edge of Subnautica 2's Early Access map in groups and kills instantly once you cross the red striped border; swim back inside the border and it stops chasing you.
The Shiver Leviathan is what kills you when you swim out of bounds in Subnautica 2. Shivers hunt in groups in the open water beyond the red striped border at the edge of the Early Access map, attack as soon as you cross it, and any hit is an instant kill (Dexerto, May 14, 2026). Turn back inside the border and they stop chasing you (PCGamesN, May 21, 2026). They are Unknown Worlds' way of fencing in a world that is not finished yet, so there is nothing to win out there except a scan; the map edge is described on Map Edge and World Tree. In LunarGaming's May 16, 2026 video, on the launch build, a Shiver comes for a diver about 6 m below the surface just past the red stripes, and a second clip, in which one catches a player in a Tadpole about 14 m down, ends at "You have been reprinted".

Where is the Shiver Leviathan?
Past the edge of the playable area. Unknown Worlds' notes call the boundary "the Early Access fence" (orange in the notes; players see a red striped border), and building is disabled beyond it (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026). The trigger is crossing the border, not depth: Dexerto met the Shivers only a few meters below the surface, on the north and east edges, and suggests heading northwest from the start to find the border quickest (Dexerto, May 14, 2026). IGN's May 19, 2026 biome guide, on the launch build, shows red barriers lining the canyon walls on the path north past the power plant, with Leviathans hiding behind them.
Kotaku's advice for beginners is to treat the wall as a wall: past it "the game will absolutely kill you" (May 14, 2026). gameranx's May 16, 2026 tips video, on the launch build, says the same: only a few meters past the Early Access warning an "even more aggressive Leviathan" hunts you, while staying close to the wall without crossing it is safe.
How to scan a Shiver Leviathan
Dexerto's method, on the launch build: equip the Scanner before you cross, go only just far enough over the line to make them appear, keep the border at your back, scan and retreat. Solo players can use the Camouflage Biomod to stay hidden while still; in co-op, one player draws them while another scans from the edge (Dexerto). If you die, you reprint at your Biobed (Death and Respawning). A Tadpole destroyed outside the fence is teleported back inside so you can recover it, since 1.2 (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026).
Shiver Leviathan changes by patch
| Update | Change |
|---|---|
| 1.1 Adaptive Measures, Jul 8, 2026 | Fixed the Shiver not attacking non-host players in multiplayer (Unknown Worlds) |
| 1.2 Buddy System, Aug 19, 2026 | Fixed it being unable to attack players attached to vehicles or Utilities; destroyed Tadpoles outside the fence return inside it (Unknown Worlds) |
| Buddy System Hotfix 2, Oct 6, 2026 | No longer interacts with unpiloted vehicles; fixed Tadpoles teleporting wrongly when returning from out of bounds (Unknown Worlds) |
Before 1.1, the Shivers attacked only the host in co-op, and before 1.2 a player holding on to a vehicle was safe from them. Every fix since launch has made the edge more reliably deadly, not less.
Will the Shiver Leviathan move when the map grows?
Unknown Worlds has not said. Early Access 2 adds a new region with several biomes in December 2026 (GamingBolt, Oct 15, 2026), so the fence will have to move somewhere; where, and whether the Shivers stay its guards, is not published as of Nov 4, 2026.

Map Edge and World TreeSubnautica 2's Early Access map ends at a striped "Early Access fence", guarded by Shiver Leviathans that kill on contact; beyond it lies out-of-bounds terrain with the giant World Tree, visible on the horizon but not reachable as of Nov 4, 2026, and since 1.2 a Tadpole destroyed out there returns inside the fence.
-
LeviathansSubnautica 2 has four Leviathans in Early Access as of Nov 4, 2026: the Collector Leviathan, the Shiver Leviathan, the Great Jaw and the Deepwing Brooder. Only the Collector hunts you inside the play area, and Early Access 2 in December 2026 makes it scarier. -
BiomodsSubnautica 2's Biomods are swappable abilities chosen at a Biolab, 5 active and 10 passive on the launch build, four of them known from the start and the rest unlocked by scanning creatures with the Bioscanner. Update 1.1 added two Biolabs and passive slots earned by scan counts, and Early Access 2 (December 2026) moves Dash to the Fins and adds new Biomods.

Death and RespawningWhen you die in Subnautica 2 you are reprinted at the last Biobed you set as your respawn point, with full stats. What you carried stays where you died in a small yellow container, its black box, which you must swim back to; carrying a Tracking Tag extends its signal.

Early Access 2Early Access 2 is Subnautica 2's next big content update, due in December 2026 with no day announced. Unknown Worlds promises a new region with several biomes, more of the colonists' and Axum story, new and returning creatures, a scarier Collector Leviathan, new Biomods and the Frog chassis for the Tadpole.

Collector LeviathanThe Collector Leviathan is Subnautica 2's giant squid, found in the trench about 700 m east of the Lifepod past the hot Graveyard waters; it cannot be killed, so you cross its trench low along the bottom in a Tadpole. Scanning it teaches the Sonic Echo Biomod.
