Collector Leviathan
The Collector Leviathan is Subnautica 2's giant squid, found in the trench about 700 m east of the Lifepod past the hot Graveyard waters; it cannot be killed, so you cross its trench low along the bottom in a Tadpole. Scanning it teaches the Sonic Echo Biomod.
The Collector Leviathan is the giant squid of Subnautica 2, and it lives in the trench about 700 m east of the Lifepod, beyond the hot orange water of the Graveyard and below the Tadpole Pens (Game Rant, May 21, 2026). It cannot be killed or fought. To get past it, take a Tadpole off the cliff, dive to the bottom of the trench and creep across close to the floor, then climb the far wall toward the Axum ruins. If it grabs your Tadpole it destroys it "with little effort", and if it grabs you outside a vehicle you die. It is the one Leviathan the story makes you face, and Early Access 2 in December 2026 gives it new behavior that Creative Director Anthony Gallegos says makes it "scarier than ever" (GamingBolt, Oct 15, 2026).

Where is the Collector Leviathan in Subnautica 2?
Head east from the Lifepod. NOA's "Investigate Tadpole Pens" objective gives you a signal marker in that direction, about 700 m away, and the Tadpole Pens building overlooks the Collector's trench at about 150 m below the surface (Game Rant, May 21, 2026). On the way the water turns orange and cloudy and a temperature warning appears: you need the Heat Tolerance Adaptation to survive that stretch. Dexerto describes the hot zone as scorched orange terrain at about 30 m, then green-tinted open water where the Collector swims at about 169 m; look for a silhouette with "long trailing fins" (Dexerto, May 2026). All Things How names the water it patrols the Tar Cascades (May 20, 2026).
Dexerto reports a second Collector much farther on: east past the first, then northeast from a crevice in a rocky mountain, about 350 m deep, near Axum dwellings, a Cicada wreck and an infected Angel Comb, where the water turns "vivid toxic yellow-green" and the World Tree shows on the horizon (Dexerto). All Things How likewise lists a Collector at the Metal Farms (May 20, 2026). Game Rant and PCGamesN describe only the one at the trench, and Buddy System Hotfix 1 improved the Collector's pathing "in the lower canyon areas" (Unknown Worlds, Sep 1, 2026). Kingfisher's Jun 19, 2026 video of every creature, on the launch build before update 1.1, also counts two Collectors: one in the sparse fields just beyond the Graveyard and one hovering over the Karakorum Metal Farms.
How to get past the Collector Leviathan
Game Rant's route, on the launch build (May 21, 2026):
- Build the Tadpole first. Crossing on foot is possible but not recommended.
- Get Heat Tolerance before you enter the hot water east of the Lifepod.
- At the Tadpole Pens, look for the Collector before you move.
- Drive off the cliff, point the Tadpole down and descend to the lowest level of the trench floor, keeping above crush depth (the game warns you in time).
- Cross close to the bottom and rise slowly, staying low. The far wall comes quickly; climb it toward the Alien Ruins.
PCGamesN adds two tips: fit the Scout Ray chassis and weave through the rocks below (May 21, 2026). A depth upgrade helps, since the later Axum areas need a Tadpole that goes past 300 m (Tadpole Upgrades). There is no reward in the trench itself, only the far side. The Collector can be distracted by other fauna or by flares, as its designers described before launch (Game Rant, Sep 17, 2025). IGN's May 16, 2026 guide, on the launch build, found that a Tadpole survives being grabbed by the Collector at least twice, and recommends the speed chassis, which can slip past its grasp altogether.
A calmer crossing: in gameranx's May 16, 2026 tips video, on the launch build, the Collector leaves you alone if you stick to the edge of the abyss and hug the Early Access wall. Do not go through the wall, though: past it the Shiver Leviathan hunts you instead.
What happens when the Collector grabs you?
It takes the Tadpole in its tentacles and can throw it; patch notes mention it grabbing and throwing Tadpoles, a shockwave, and an "eating scene" when it catches a swimmer (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026). Game Rant found no way out once you are wrapped in its tentacles (May 21, 2026). The Camouflage Biomod used to free a captured player mid-scene; 1.2 fixed that, and Buddy System Hotfix 1 closed other "exploits" that released players from an aggressive creature's grip (Sep 1, 2026). Death means reprinting at your Biobed (Death and Respawning). A destroyed Tadpole outside the Early Access fence is teleported back inside since 1.2.
What is the Collector Leviathan?
Its Databank entry, as Dexerto quotes it, calls it a solitary, highly intelligent predator of the deep that hunts hard-shelled prey such as coral crabs and Great Jaws. It has four long clawed hunting tentacles and eight smaller arms around a beak that can tear plate titanium, a many-chambered organ that works like sonar, a W-shaped pupil that creases in bright light, and a body showing "abyssal gigantism"; the entry suggests small submersibles and habitats may draw it (Dexerto, May 14, 2026). Game Rant's reveal coverage describes a squid-like, Cthulhu-influenced design whose split-body glow shows from afar and a temperament that is "easily irritable" (Sep 17, 2025).
Unknown Worlds gave the Collector a dev vlog of its own, "Creating the Collector Leviathan" (Sep 16, 2025), with visual development lead Cory Strader, lead character artist Marcelo Figueredo, animators Colin Knueppel and Stefaan Sorensen, game designer Louis Karim, VFX artist Laura Nedal and AI gameplay lead engineer Antonio Muñoz Gallego, from concept art to the creature in the game (Unknown Worlds). See Dev Vlogs.
Scanning the Collector: the Sonic Echo Biomod
Scanning the Collector teaches Sonic Echo, an active Biomod that pings nearby ore (Game Rant, May 20, 2026). You apply it at a Biolab; see Biomods. Scan from inside the Tadpole or from a distance, and leave at once.

The Collector in Early Access 2
The next region is the Collector's: in June Gallegos called it the home of the Collector Leviathan and one of the team's scariest (PCGamesN, Jun 4, 2026). The Oct 22, 2026 vlog promised to show "how this update connects back to the Collector Leviathan" (Unknown Worlds), and the Oct 15 vlog gave it new behavior (GamingBolt). In that Oct 22 vlog the narrative team says the new region's trenches exist because the Collector hunts everything that comes above them, and that its creatures respond to its presence.
The Nov 3, 2026 vlog, "From Creatures to Chassis", showed more: a new fish, the Descender, looks toward the Collector and hides from it, a clue to where it is coming from, and the Collector's four tentacles are now physically simulated in the water and directed one by one, to reach out, grab surfaces and pull itself along. How hard it hunts and what else changes are not published, as of Nov 4, 2026. See Early Access 2.

GraveyardThe Graveyard is Subnautica 2's hot, orange-watered biome, 0 to 266 m deep, that needs the Heat Tolerance Adaptation; it holds Gold, Salt, Sulfur and Lithium, the Tadpole Pens, Tailings Village, a Cicada Wreck, Nahema's Lab and hundreds of Water Slugs.
-
TadpoleThe Tadpole is Subnautica 2's only submersible in Early Access, built at a Vehicle Fabricator on a Moonpool from 2 Titanium Ingots, 1 Glass, 1 System Chip and 1 Power Cell. Its crush depth is 250 m until a Depth Module raises it, and it takes the Scout Ray and Haul chassis. -
Early Access 2Early Access 2 is Subnautica 2's next big content update, due in December 2026 with no day announced. Unknown Worlds promises a new region with several biomes, more of the colonists' and Axum story, new and returning creatures, a scarier Collector Leviathan, new Biomods and the Frog chassis for the Tadpole.
-
LeviathansSubnautica 2 has four Leviathans in Early Access as of Nov 4, 2026: the Collector Leviathan, the Shiver Leviathan, the Great Jaw and the Deepwing Brooder. Only the Collector hunts you inside the play area, and Early Access 2 in December 2026 makes it scarier. -
AdaptationsSubnautica 2 has four Adaptations, permanent body changes taken from Angel Combs, as of Nov 4, 2026. Pressure Tolerance comes in the opening, Digestion from an Angel Comb about 130 to 180 m north-northeast of the Lifepod, Heat Tolerance from an infected Angel Comb about 200 m northwest once the Sonic Resonator clears it, and Axum Vision from an Angel Comb about 1,800 m east.
