Early Access 2
Early Access 2 is Subnautica 2's next big content update, due in December 2026 with no day announced. Unknown Worlds promises a new region with several biomes, more of the colonists' and Axum story, new and returning creatures, a scarier Collector Leviathan, new Biomods and the Frog chassis for the Tadpole.
Early Access 2 is Subnautica 2's next big content update, and Unknown Worlds says it comes in December 2026, with no day announced as of Nov 4, 2026. Creative Director Anthony Gallegos calls it the "most substantial" update since launch: a new region with several new biomes, more of the colonists' story, many new creatures, a scarier Collector Leviathan, new Biomods, the "stompy" Frog chassis for the Tadpole, and Dash moving to the Fins (GamingBolt, Oct 15, 2026). It is the "next big drop" the May 15, 2026 roadmap promised after the two smaller updates, Adaptive Measures and Buddy System.

When does Early Access 2 come out?
In December 2026. The Nov 3, 2026 post for the second vlog episode describes the Frog chassis "coming with our next content update in December" (Unknown Worlds). No day, time or version number has been given. Earlier timing has moved: the Jul 7, 2026 Update Vlog put Early Access 2 "later in the year" (Unknown Worlds), and Spain's Vandal wrote on Oct 20, 2026 that it was timed for "the approach of Halloween" (Vandal). The Nov 3 post supersedes that. Unknown Worlds has used an opt-in Experimental Branch on Steam to preview updates shortly before release, so a test build may appear first; it has not said so for this update.
The Voyage to Early Access 2 vlogs
Unknown Worlds is building up to the update with a weekly-to-fortnightly Dev Vlog series, each posted on Steam with a short summary (the full list of vlogs is on Dev Vlogs):
| Date | Episode | Who and what |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 15, 2026 | Voyage to Early Access 2 Begins | Anthony Gallegos introduces the series, the people in later episodes and "some sneak peeks" |
| Oct 22, 2026 | Beyond the Surface | Narrative designers Seth Dickinson and Tim Partlett with Gallegos on the colonists, the Axum, environmental storytelling and the Collector |
| Nov 3, 2026 | From Creatures to Chassis | New and returning creatures, new creature technology, Biomods and the Frog chassis |
The new region and biomes
The update adds a new region with several new biomes. Gallegos described it as "dark, it's threatening, and it's really beautiful at the same time" (GamingBolt, Oct 15, 2026). In the Jun 4, 2026 vlog he had already teased a new region that is home to the Collector Leviathan, with existing saves kept (PCGamesN, Jun 4, 2026); PCGamesN placed it in update 1.1 at the time, but 1.1 shipped without it. No biome has been added since launch (Map and Biomes), so this would be the first expansion of the map past today's Early Access fence (Map Edge and World Tree). Unknown Worlds has not said whether the fence moves or where the region lies.
The region's and biomes' official names are not announced. In the Oct 22 vlog the narrative designers speak only of "the trenches", which exist because the Collector Leviathan hunts everything that comes above them, and of tar fields that support the clams that grow there. A creator video calls an area "Scorpius Trenches", and creator videos also name a "Trident" submarine; both come from datamined or unreleased files, not from Unknown Worlds, and are unconfirmed.
Story: the colonists and the Axum
The Oct 22 episode promises "what's next for the Colonists' story", "the growing history of the Axum", storytelling that lets players piece things together by exploring, and how the update "connects back to the Collector Leviathan" (Unknown Worlds). In Early Access today the story stops after the Observatory (Story and Lore, The Axum, Story Walkthrough); the roadmap reserved "the next chapter of the story" for this drop.
Creatures and the scarier Collector
The Nov 3 episode covers "dynamic new (and returning) creatures" and new systems meant to make them "more alive and more… alien" (Unknown Worlds); which creatures return is not stated in writing. The video itself shows two new ones: the Tar Eel, which lies low in flowing tar to challenge players on the ground, and the Descender, a fish of the Ignis Coil that looks toward the Collector and hides from it, a clue to where the leviathan is; the team also says the Collector's four tentacles are now physically simulated, reaching out to grab surfaces and pull it along. GamingBolt reports that the Collector Leviathan becomes scarier (Oct 15, 2026), and Vandal that the new region has creatures "that cannot be killed" (Oct 20, 2026). That fits the series: there are no weapons, by design (Dangerous Creatures, Leviathans, Creatures).
Frog chassis, Biomods and Dash
The Frog chassis adds limbs to the Tadpole (GamingBolt) and joins today's Scout Ray and Haul (Tadpole Chassis). In June Gallegos said it "brings back one of the most-requested player experiences" and told players to "get ready to get stompy" (PCGamesN), which PCGamesN read as a nod to the first game's walking Prawn Suit. GamingBolt notes it was found in game files earlier as the "Sea Frog Chassis". In the Nov 3 vlog the team calls it "like an exosuit", a set of arms and legs that attach to the Tadpole, compares it to the first game's Prawn Suit, and says it has "a very strong jump", a dash and climbing. Its recipe and depth are not known.
New Biomods come with the update, and Dash moves to the Fins, so it no longer takes a Biomod slot (GamingBolt; Equipment). The Nov 3 vlog shows some of them, made with the update's creatures in mind: Hard Skull, from a Hammerhead's DNA, which knocks things around; a Bubble Trail whose bubbles co-op partners can collect; and a porpoising launch near the surface that gives a speed bonus. No full list is published.
What is not known
As of Nov 4, 2026: the day in December, the version number, the region's and biomes' names, the full list of new and returning creatures and of new Biomods, the Frog chassis's recipe and depth, whether the fence moves, and whether an Experimental test comes first. Unknown Worlds has said nothing about a price change at this update; the price is to rise only after Early Access (Price and Editions).
