Map Edge and World Tree
Subnautica 2's Early Access map ends at a striped "Early Access fence", guarded by Shiver Leviathans that kill on contact; beyond it lies out-of-bounds terrain with the giant World Tree, visible on the horizon but not reachable as of Nov 4, 2026, and since 1.2 a Tadpole destroyed out there returns inside the fence.
Subnautica 2's playable area in Early Access ends at a striped border that Unknown Worlds calls the "Early Access fence" (orange in its notes, a red striped wall to most players), and anything you do past it is at your own risk: Shiver Leviathans guard the out-of-bounds water and attack the moment you cross, building is disabled, and the giant World Tree you can see on the horizon cannot be reached, as of Nov 4, 2026. Kotaku put it bluntly at launch: past the wall "the game will absolutely kill you the moment you try" (May 14, 2026). Since 1.2 Buddy System (Aug 19, 2026), "Tadpoles that are destroyed outside of the Early Access fence teleport inside of the Early Access fence so that they can be recovered" (Unknown Worlds).

What happens if you cross the red border in Subnautica 2?
The Shiver Leviathans attack. PCGamesN says they guard the out-of-bounds area in groups, strike as soon as a player crosses the red border, and lose interest if you retreat inside (May 21, 2026). Dexerto says their hits are an instant kill and places them along the north and east edges, a few meters below the surface (May 14, 2026). They have been changed three times since launch:
- 1.1 (Jul 8, 2026): fixed the Shiver not attacking non-host players in multiplayer, so everyone in a co-op game is a target (Unknown Worlds).
- 1.2 (Aug 19, 2026): fixed it being unable to attack players attached to vehicles or Utilities (Unknown Worlds).
- Buddy System Hotfix 2 (Oct 6, 2026): "Shiver Leviathan no longer interacts with unpiloted vehicles" (Unknown Worlds).
Past the fence you also cannot build: 1.2 fixed the "disabled building notice" not showing for co-op clients who had crossed the orange fence, and a text overlap in the fence's Early Access message in some languages (Unknown Worlds). If you die out there, you reprint at your Biobed as usual; see Death and Respawning.
Kingfisher's Jun 19, 2026 creature guide, on the build before 1.1, finds the Shiver Leviathan "only in the void, a big blue desert that lies beyond the boundaries of the current map", traveling in groups called shivers in which two or three males ride on a much larger female.
Since 1.1 the groups form differently: in Aci's Jul 8, 2026 video on that update, out past the fence, the males "now spawn detached from their female and only attach when they get close to you".
Getting your Tadpole back
Before 1.2 a Tadpole destroyed beyond the fence was out of reach. Now it is teleported inside the fence to be recovered (1.2). Buddy System Hotfix 2 (Oct 6, 2026) fixed the two faults that followed: Tadpoles "incorrectly teleported when returning from out-of-bounds areas", and destroyed Tadpoles with chassis modules attached failing to teleport back into bounds (Unknown Worlds). A player who is stuck can use Unstuck from the menu; 1.2 made it work inside a Tadpole.
What is the World Tree in Subnautica 2?
The World Tree is the giant tree on the horizon, visible from the playable area but standing in out-of-bounds terrain you cannot reach in Early Access (Beebom, May 19, 2026). Colonist logs link it to the infection, Beebom says; All Things How writes that colonist blackboxes describe it as the source of the virus, and puts it in out-of-bounds terrain reaching about 3,100 m deep (May 20, 2026). Dexerto reports a second Collector Leviathan about 350 m deep in a toxic yellow-green Bloom area northeast of the Karakorum ruins, before the World Tree (Dexerto).
Unknown Worlds has said little about it. 1.1 added "the World Tree Relic decoration (seen in the trailer) as a buildable item" (Unknown Worlds), and 1.2 fixed flickering on the World Tree with Shadow quality set to High (Unknown Worlds). Whether you will reach it, and when, is not announced as of Nov 4, 2026. See The Bloom and Story and Lore.
What lies beyond the fence?
Not much that is confirmed. Beebom lists the World Tree and "Spiff Island" as out-of-bounds points of interest, with no resources (May 19, 2026). All Things How lists "Xanadu" as an upcoming biome with the World Tree and an Alien Crypt; no official source names it, so treat it as unconfirmed. The same goes for "Scorpius Trenches", a name from creator videos about unreleased files. Unknown Worlds says only that Early Access 2, due in December 2026, is the next big content update, and its roadmap says the next big drop "expands on the world, biomes, creatures" (May 15, 2026).
Frequently asked questions
What is the red border in Subnautica 2? The edge of the Early Access map, which Unknown Worlds calls the Early Access fence. Shiver Leviathans attack anyone who crosses it, and building is disabled beyond it.
Can you go out of bounds in Subnautica 2? You can swim or drive past the fence, but Shiver Leviathans kill on contact there, and the out-of-bounds terrain holds nothing to collect as of Nov 4, 2026.
Can you reach the World Tree in Subnautica 2? No. The World Tree stands in out-of-bounds terrain in Early Access as of Nov 4, 2026; Unknown Worlds has not said when it becomes reachable.
How do you get your Tadpole back from out of bounds in Subnautica 2? Since update 1.2 (Aug 19, 2026), a Tadpole destroyed outside the Early Access fence is teleported back inside it so you can recover it; Buddy System Hotfix 2 (Oct 6, 2026) fixed cases where that went wrong.
Where are the Shiver Leviathans in Subnautica 2? Beyond the map's edge. Dexerto places them along the north and east edges, a few meters below the surface; retreating inside the fence makes them lose interest.

Shiver LeviathanThe Shiver Leviathan guards the edge of Subnautica 2's Early Access map in groups and kills instantly once you cross the red striped border; swim back inside the border and it stops chasing you.

Early Access 2Early Access 2 is Subnautica 2's next big content update, due in December 2026 with no day announced. Unknown Worlds promises a new region with several biomes, more of the colonists' and Axum story, new and returning creatures, a scarier Collector Leviathan, new Biomods and the Frog chassis for the Tadpole.

Death and RespawningWhen you die in Subnautica 2 you are reprinted at the last Biobed you set as your respawn point, with full stats. What you carried stays where you died in a small yellow container, its black box, which you must swim back to; carrying a Tracking Tag extends its signal.
-
TadpoleThe Tadpole is Subnautica 2's only submersible in Early Access, built at a Vehicle Fabricator on a Moonpool from 2 Titanium Ingots, 1 Glass, 1 System Chip and 1 Power Cell. Its crush depth is 250 m until a Depth Module raises it, and it takes the Scout Ray and Haul chassis. -
Collector LeviathanThe Collector Leviathan is Subnautica 2's giant squid, found in the trench about 700 m east of the Lifepod past the hot Graveyard waters; it cannot be killed, so you cross its trench low along the bottom in a Tadpole. Scanning it teaches the Sonic Echo Biomod.
-
The BloomThe Bloom is Subnautica 2's infection: biofilm, sap, cankers and parasites that block caves, infect creatures and Angel Combs, and cannot be cleared by hand. You get past it with the Sonic Resonator, and the armored pink cankers need the Feedback Resonator; some places and guides call it the Blight.
