Tar Cascades
The Tar Cascades, in the area Unknown Worlds calls the Sparse Plains, are Subnautica 2's dark, tar-coated crossing about 700 m east of the Lifepod, 0 to 250 m deep, where the Collector Leviathan guards the way to the Axum ruins; cross low along the bottom in a Tadpole.
The Tar Cascades are Subnautica 2's dark, tar-coated crossing about 700 m east of the Lifepod, 0 to 250 m deep, and the territory of the Collector Leviathan: past the Tadpole Pens you must get through its trench to reach the Alien Ruins on Observatory Island, and Game Rant's advice is to stay low along the bottom in a Tadpole (May 21, 2026). All Things How groups the Tar Cascades as the Sparse Plains region (May 20, 2026). "Sparse Plains" is also Unknown Worlds' own name: 1.2 "Sealed off spot where players can get under the map near Sparse Plains" (Unknown Worlds, Aug 19, 2026). "Tar Cascades" is the guides' name.

How do you get past the Collector Leviathan?
The Collector patrols the trench between the Tadpole Pens and the Alien Ruins. A Tadpole it grabs is destroyed with little effort, and a swimmer it grabs dies (Game Rant, May 21, 2026). What the launch guides recommend:
- Go by Tadpole, low: cross in the Tadpole, hugging the seafloor, rather than swimming or crossing near the surface (Game Rant; All Things How says the same for the whole trip east).
- Know where it is: Dexerto places the Collector in open water east of the hot zone at about 169 m; its split-body glow is visible from afar.
- Distract it: the Collector is "easily irritable" and can be distracted by other fauna or flares, Game Rant reported from its reveal (Game Rant, Sep 17, 2025). Small submersibles and habitats attract it.
- Go faster: PCGamesN says the Scout Ray chassis, a hydrofoil, helps cross the first chasm and escape the Leviathan (PCGamesN). See Tadpole Chassis.
IGN's May 16, 2026 Collector guide, on the launch build, measures the gap at about 500 m wide, several hundred meters east of the Lifepod, reached through a region of volcanic geysers.
In IGN's play the Tadpole survived being grabbed and damaged by the Collector at least twice, and the chassis upgrade let it move fast enough to slip the grasp altogether. That was before Hotfix 2 (Oct 6, 2026) "Improved Leviathan grab attack for Tadpole", so the Collector may hold on harder now.
Since launch its behavior has changed. 1.2 fixed it spinning 360 degrees when it grabs or throws a Tadpole, its shockwave in multiplayer, and the Camouflage Biomod making it let go of a captured player during the "eating scene" (Unknown Worlds). Buddy System Hotfix 1 (Sep 1, 2026) improved its pathing in the "lower canyon areas" and tightened its collision (Unknown Worlds), and Hotfix 2 (Oct 6, 2026) "Improved Leviathan grab attack for Tadpole" (Unknown Worlds). Scanning it unlocks the Sonic Echo Biomod (Game Rant). Unknown Worlds says Early Access 2 in December 2026 connects back to the Collector (Unknown Worlds, Oct 22, 2026).
Resources
All Things How lists Titanium, Copper, Quartz and Celestine, and Beebom adds Dragon's Scale Coral (May 19, 2026). Celestine, the light blue crystal that makes Strontium and the Modification Station, is the reason to stop. Game Rant's safer Celestine is on rock faces about 290 m south of the Alien Ruins waypoint, 250 m or deeper, "beyond" the Collector (May 15, 2026), so most players mine it after the crossing. See Resources.
Frequently asked questions
Where are the Tar Cascades in Subnautica 2? About 700 m east of the Lifepod, 0 to 250 m deep, by All Things How's launch-build reference; Unknown Worlds calls the area the Sparse Plains.
Where is the Collector Leviathan in Subnautica 2? In the trench about 700 m east, between the Tadpole Pens and the Alien Ruins; Dexerto also reports a second one in a Bloom area near the World Tree at about 350 m.
How do you cross to the Alien Ruins in Subnautica 2? In a Tadpole, staying low along the seafloor through the Collector Leviathan's trench, Game Rant advises; flares and other fauna can distract it.
Can the Collector Leviathan kill you in Subnautica 2? Yes. A swimmer it grabs dies, and it destroys a grabbed Tadpole with little effort; you reprint at your Biobed.

Collector LeviathanThe Collector Leviathan is Subnautica 2's giant squid, found in the trench about 700 m east of the Lifepod past the hot Graveyard waters; it cannot be killed, so you cross its trench low along the bottom in a Tadpole. Scanning it teaches the Sonic Echo Biomod.
-
Observatory IslandObservatory Island is Subnautica 2's Axum tower rising out of the sea about 1,000 to 1,200 m east of the Lifepod, with the Alien Ruins (Unknown Worlds' Axum Ruins), the Rosetta Stone, a Biolab since 1.1 and the Axum Observatory, where the Early Access story stops.
-
TadpoleThe Tadpole is Subnautica 2's only submersible in Early Access, built at a Vehicle Fabricator on a Moonpool from 2 Titanium Ingots, 1 Glass, 1 System Chip and 1 Power Cell. Its crush depth is 250 m until a Depth Module raises it, and it takes the Scout Ray and Haul chassis. -
GraveyardThe Graveyard is Subnautica 2's hot, orange-watered biome, 0 to 266 m deep, that needs the Heat Tolerance Adaptation; it holds Gold, Salt, Sulfur and Lithium, the Tadpole Pens, Tailings Village, a Cicada Wreck, Nahema's Lab and hundreds of Water Slugs.

Tadpole ChassisSubnautica 2's Tadpole docks to a chassis that changes its role: the Scout Ray adds hydrofoil wings for speed, and the Haul adds passenger seats and much more cargo. A third, the "stompy" Frog chassis, arrives with Early Access 2 in December 2026. -
Early Access 2Early Access 2 is Subnautica 2's next big content update, due in December 2026 with no day announced. Unknown Worlds promises a new region with several biomes, more of the colonists' and Axum story, new and returning creatures, a scarier Collector Leviathan, new Biomods and the Frog chassis for the Tadpole.
